Reporting Child Abuse

New Jersey's law states: "Any person having reasonable cause to believe that a child has been abused or neglected shall report it immediately to DYFS" (N.J.S.A. 9.6-8.10). DYFS accepts all reports of suspected abuse and neglect by telephone, in writing and in person, from all sources, including the child and parent themselves. Reports may be made anonymously. The steps to making a referral are: Between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays contact the local office by phone at 1-800-392-2654. Nights, weekends and Holidays contact 1-877-NJ ABUSE (1-877-652-2873) if there is a child abuse emergency that requires an immediate responce.
